Original Medicare (Part A & B)

This is the basic Medicare plan provided by the government. It includes hospital and medical insurance, but doesn’t cover everything.

  • Part A (Hospital Insurance): Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home healthcare services.
  • Part B (Medical Insurance): Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.
  • Coverage Limitations: Doesn’t include vision, dental, hearing, or long-term care.

Medicare Advantage (Part C)

This is a private insurance plan that replaces Original Medicare and usually adds extra benefits.

  • Often includes vision, dental, and hearing coverage
  • May include prescription drug coverage
  • Offers wellness programs and gym memberships
  • Can include transportation to medical appointments
  • May have lower out-of-pocket costs, but you usually need to use in-network doctors

Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage)

This plan helps pay for medications and is purchased separately from Original Medicare.

  • Covers the cost of prescription drugs
  • Each plan has its own list of covered medications (formulary)
  • It's important to sign up early to avoid late enrollment penalties
  • Drugs are grouped into tiers with different prices for generic vs. brand-name

Medigap (Medicare Supplement Plans)

These are add-on plans that help pay for costs not covered by Original Medicare.

  • Helps with copayments, deductibles, and coinsurance
  • Works with Original Medicare, not on its own
  • Plans are standardized (like Plan G, Plan N), but benefits vary by type
